I. The Gathering Together

Matthew 24:37-42
VERSE 37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the son of man be.
“But” = For.
“also” – not in the text.
“coming” – parousia (noun) = the being or becoming present; presence, arrival.
parousia indicates the presence of one upon arrival.
37 For, as Noah’s days were, so shall be [the time of] the arrival* of the son of man.
VERSE 38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark,
“flood” – kataklusmos = dashing down upon; deluge, an inundation.
“marrying” = entering marriage.
“giving in marriage” = growing in marriage.
38 For, as in the days before the deluge, they were eating and drinking, entering marriage and growing in marriage, until that day Noah entered into the ark.
VERSE 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the son of man b
“flood” – kataklusmos = dashing down upon; deluge, an inundation.
“came” – erchomai = to come, to arrive. Indicates arrival.
“took away” - airō (verb) = to take up; to take away; to take up and carry away.
“coming” – parousia (noun) = the being or becoming present; presence, arrival.
39 And they knew not [what was about to happen] until the deluge arrived and took up all. So shall be [the time of] the arrival* of the son of man
*Jesus is referring to the time of the arrival of the son of man during the Day of The Lord.
VERSE 40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
“the one” “the other” – no word “the” in the text.
“be taken” – paralambanō = to take, or receive, to one’s self.
“left” – aphiēmi = to send away, or let go, from one’s self.
40 Then two will be in the field. One is received [to him] and one is sent away [from him].
VERSE 41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
“women shall be” is in italics. Can be omitted.
“grinding” – alēthō (verb) = to grind.
In the text it is a participle, present tense = “are grinding”.
“at” – en = in.
“mill” – mulos = millstone.
“at the mill” is “in the millstone”.
“the one”, “the other” – no word “the” in the text.
“taken” – paralambanō = to take, or receive, to one’s self.
“left” – aphiēmi = to send away, or let go, from one’s self.
41 Two are grinding in the millstone. One is received [to him], and one is sent away [from him].
VERSE 42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
“know” – eidō = to perceive, to see, to know.
“hour” – hēmera = day.
“come” – erchomai = to come, to arrive. Indicates arrival.
42 Therefore, watch! For you know not what day your lord arrives.
