“There Shall Be
A Performance of Those Things
Which Were Told Her from The Lord”
These words were spoken by prophecy to Mary by her cousin Elisabeth. Here is the record:
:
Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
Mary was engaged to be married to Joseph, and she had just been given a life-changing message from the Lord God by His messenger-angel Gabriel. Gabriel had been sent by God to Nazareth of Galilee. There, Gabriel told Mary that she had found favor with God, that she would conceive by the power of the Highest and would bring forth a son to be named Jesus.
Mary’s response to this astounding, life-changing message was, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it unto me according to thy word.” God created in Mary’s womb the seed that united with her egg, and the lord Jesus Christ, the promised redeemer, was conceived.
Mary now realized the dilemma of her new circumstances. She was soon to be married to Joseph and would have to tell him about her pregnancy. She needed some counsel and encouragement. Gabriel had told her that her cousin Elisabeth had also conceived a son. Elisabeth’s pregnancy was also a miracle of God because Elisabeth had not only been barren but was also of old age. Mary went with haste to see Elisabeth, who was in the sixth month of her pregnancy.
And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, The babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with holy spirit:
Mary may have been struggling with the way to reveal to Elisabeth the wondrous and extraordinary things that had just occurred. But before Mary could even begin to unfold her story, Elisabeth overflowed with words inspired by God’s holy spirit.
And she spoke out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my lord should come to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, The babe leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance Of those things which were told her from the Lord.
LUKE 1:39-45
This powerful and assuring message from Elisabeth eliminated any anxiety in Mary. The declaration also established for her that all the things spoken to her by Gabriel would absolutely come to pass. Just imagine how Mary’s heart thrilled to hear, “There shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord”!
Mary was strengthened in her confidence of the miraculous things that God was doing. Spiritually stirred, she replied to Elisabeth with an equally dynamic, inspired response.
And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For He hath regarded the low estate of His handmaiden: For, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For He that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is His name. And His mercy is on them that fear Him from generation to generation. He hath shewed strength with His arm; He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted the humble. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich He hath sent empty away. He hath helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy, As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed for ever. And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house. LUKE 1:46-56
Mary remarked that she was indeed blessed because God, Who is mighty, had done great things for her. Elisabeth similarly had said, “Blessed is she that believed” and that God would perform all the things He had told her. That same mighty God does great things for you and me today. He continues to perform according to all that He has promised. His Word is just as good today as it was for Mary and Elisabeth then. Just as they believed God and received so abundantly, we believe and receive also. Believing is the key to receiving!
That God would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, To be strengthened with might by His spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by believing; That you, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all the saints What is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, So that you might be filled with all the fulness of God. Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, According to the power that worketh in us, Unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus, Unto all the generations of the age of the ages! Amen.
